Trump Erupts Over Reindictment On Coup Attempt Charges
Donald Trump lashed out on Truth Social following special counsel Jack Smith’s announcement on Tuesday that Trump had been reindicted on four charges connected to his actions on January 6, 2021, aimed at overturning the 2020 election results.
In his post, Trump accused Smith of reviving a “dead” investigation in a desperate attempt to maintain credibility. He referred to Smith as the “illegally appointed ‘Special Counsel'” and labeled him “Deranged.”
Trump dismissed the new indictment as “ridiculous,” claiming it was plagued by the same issues as the previous one and insisting it should be thrown out “IMMEDIATELY.”
“Trump’s case related to the Florida document allegations has been fully dismissed.
He claims this was simply an attempt to interfere with the upcoming election and distract Americans from the issues facing the nation under Kamala Harris’s leadership, such as the border crisis, migrant-related crime, soaring inflation, and the looming threat of World War III,” Trump stated.
Despite this dismissal, Trump still faces the same four charges that were originally brought against him last year. The updated indictment highlights his role in the events leading up to the Capitol attack following his loss in the 2020 election.
It also details Trump’s alleged efforts to overturn the election results by pressuring key states to submit false Electoral College votes in his favor.
However, the new indictment, which is slightly shorter, no longer includes references to Trump’s attempts to involve federal executive branch employees under his command.
This change seems to reflect the Supreme Court’s July ruling, which determined that Trump was immune from criminal prosecution for “official acts” carried out while he was president.
Smith stated that the new grand jury presented a superseding indictment, which, according to him, reflects the government’s commitment to respecting and implementing the Supreme Court’s rulings.
Trump expressed his outrage, calling it “shocking” that he was reindicted “immediately after our Supreme Court victory on immunity and more.”
He further added, “My attorneys have informed me that it’s not even permissible to bring cases right before an election—this is a direct assault on democracy!” Trump continued, calling the situation “an unprecedented abuse of the criminal justice system.”
Without providing evidence, Trump also accused Vice President Kamala Harris of being “actively involved” in pushing for the reindictment.
“Smith has essentially rehashed the same case in an attempt to circumvent the Supreme Court’s decision,” Trump claimed. He predicted that the American people would recognize what’s happening with all these “corrupt lawsuits” and would “reject them by giving me an overwhelming victory on November 5th in the presidential election.”
