- It’s Trump versus Biden!
- The latest large national polls show Joe Biden’s lead over Donald Trump slipping away.
- More voters have qualms about Biden’s age than Trump’s legal battles, the polls indicate.
- Biden’s approval rating is shrinking, and Trump leads in several polls of likely voters.
It’s Trump versus Biden: Super Tuesday has concluded, effectively diminishing any significant chances for candidates other than President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump to secure their parties’ nominations.
Trump emerged victorious in 14 out of the 15 states holding primaries on Tuesday, seemingly dashing the hopes of his challenger Nikki Haley, the former ambassador to the UN.
Meanwhile, Biden is working hard to drum up enthusiasm from voters across the nation as he solidifies his position as the Democratic Party’s nominee for president.
However, recent polling suggests that he could use all the support he can get. According to four major national polls released this week, Trump is currently leading Biden by 2 to 5 points among registered voters.
Though the race is tight and the journey to November is still ahead, Trump seems to have the advantage at the moment. And it’s not just in terms of overall favorability ratings where he’s pulling ahead.
In a February national survey conducted by Schoen Cooperman Research among registered voters, 36% of respondents expressed more concern about Biden’s age (81) and reports of potential cognitive decline compared to Trump’s legal battles.
Despite facing 91 criminal counts and numerous civil cases, 33% of respondents indicated they were more troubled by Trump’s ethical conduct. Additionally, 22% reported being equally concerned about both Trump’s ethics and Biden’s mental fitness.
In the latest New York Times-Siena College poll of registered voters conducted over the weekend, respondents from various age groups, racial backgrounds, and genders expressed a perception that they personally benefited more from Trump’s policies during his tenure compared to Biden’s.
According to Fox News, Biden’s job approval rating stands at 42%, which is lower than that of his predecessors at the beginning of their reelection years. In comparison, Trump had a 45% approval rating in 2020, Obama had 45% in 2012, and Bush enjoyed a 53% approval rating in 2004.
Recent surveys conducted by YouGov and CBS indicate that voters tend to view the economy during Trump’s presidency more positively than they do the current economic situation under Biden. Sixty-five percent of respondents in these polls felt that the economy was “good” under Trump, whereas only 38% expressed the same sentiment about the current economy.
CBS also highlighted that in their surveys, Trump outperformed Biden in terms of which candidate respondents believed was more likely to advocate for people like them, who had a clearer vision for the country, and how they rated each candidate’s presidency.
While Trump doesn’t always lead in every poll, there’s been a shift in some recent surveys. A February Quinnipiac poll showed Biden’s lead narrowing, and Fox News reported that 43% of respondents viewed Biden as honest and trustworthy, while only 36% said the same for Trump.
However, it’s worth noting that polls have been inaccurate in the past, and Biden’s campaign is banking on that uncertainty.
“Our campaign is focused on our strategy and remains determined to win, just as we did in 2020,” stated Michael Tyler, Biden’s campaign communications director, as reported by Politico on Sunday night.
